Covid-19 has had many negative effects on our lives, but it has brought at least one positive. Starting September 1st, 2020, all Schuyler Community School students are offered free breakfast and lunch until December 18th, or until funds run out.

The United States Department of Agriculture is extending the summer food program, “The USDA is extending the program to help the families during these hard times” according to Jamie Ramirez, SCS Food Service Director. The USDA is the U.S. federal executive department responsible for developing laws about farming, forestry, rural economic development, and food. The students of SCS will be able to get breakfast and lunch without the need to pay.

The food program has many benefits but there is one negative that comes with the food program. According to Ramirez, “The only negative I can think of is that not all the students are taking advantage of the free meals, especially free breakfasts.” Students are encouraged to take advantage of the free meals that the USDA has offered. “A lot of students are taking advantage of the free meals but I would like to see all the students taking advantage of the free meals.” Ramirez said. Families can sign up for the free meals by going to the SCS website and filling out a meal application.łŁ
