Biophilic means love of nature. Biophilia focuses on human’s innate attraction to nature and natural processes. It recommends that we have a genetic connection to the natural world built up through hundreds of thousands of years of living in agrarian settings. It may also help reduce stress in a workplace or elsewhere. Biophilic design is adding nature and life to a space.
“We are using it in our project to address teachers’ classrooms and add more greenery, lighting, and happiness” said Casey Harper. Casey Harper is a teacher at Schuyler Central High School. Mr. Harper’s fourth period Plant Science class is learning about biophilic design. They are also learning about the benefits of having plants in indoor spaces. Landscape design, greenhouse management, floriculture design, and interior design are all different types of careers that this project is associated with. “No, we are not putting any plants in the rooms, but we are designing a plan that will be given to each teacher that will address their room and what steps to further add biophilic design” stated Mr. Harper. According to Mr. Harper, this will give the teachers the opportunity to support the greenhouse and agriculture education department. This is the first time Schuyler Central High School students have done this in the school building. “In past years, we have designed outside landscaping, but not indoor” said Mr. Harper.
