Warriors are off to State
The two athletes that are going to be competing at the Track and Field State competition are (senior) Marisol Deanda and (junior) Austin McCulloch. Marisol will be competing in the 3200 and 1600 meter run. Austin will be competing in pole vault. Austin hit a new personal best at the Conference meet with a height of 12’2 feet. At Districts, Austin was able to stay consistent and hit 12’2 again to get third. While Marisol was able to edge out her competition, she was able to hit a time of 12:31:50 so that she could place third in the 3200. Marisol was also able to be the next best six for the 1600 in Class B. In order for an athlete to go to State, they would have to place in the top three in their respective event. Athletes also still get a chance if they’re the six next best runners in Class B.
Austin started off his season very well and was consistent at 11 feet. Marisol started her season a little rough, however she is now able to break 13 minutes for the two mile. She was able to get to the midway mark and was able to decrease her time and stay consistent around the 12:45 mark. “I was very satisfied with my performance,” Austin explained. There has not been a pole vaulter who has made it to State from Schuyler in over 15 years. When asked how she was going to prepare for State, Marisol shared “I believe that I have done everything to prepare, I know what I need to do, all I have to do now is stay relaxed and let it happen.” This is Marisol’s first time competing at State Track and Field, however during her high school career she has qualified for State Cross Country three times.
