Schuyler Central High School Mechatronic students are getting the opportunity for the Mechatronic program at Central Community College in Columbus. There were six SCHS students who signed letters of intent with CCC to study in the mechatronics program in the Spring of this year. The six students were; Diego Aranda, Hector “Daniel” Cruz, Rony Cristobal-Gaspar, Joan Hernandez, and Luciano “William” Mateo. Don Seehusen, the Skilled and Technical Science teacher has marked his 5th and final year at SCHS. According to Mr. Seehusen, “Mechatronics is the intersection of IT and automation.” Mr. Seehusen shared that his favorite part about helping his senior students is “the opportunities it gives to students after graduation.” As for the future, the mechatronics program will continue. “I don’t see it going away just because I do,” shared Mr. Seehusen. One benefit students get by taking the Mechatronics class is preparation for high skill, high demand and high pay career. There are a lot of businesses in the area who are in need of employees with these skills such as Cargill in Schuyler, Vishay, and BD both in Columbus.
Luciano “William” Mateo, a senior enrolled in Mechatronics, has enjoyed “labs and running all the sensors.” As a senior, William had to start thinking about the different careers he would like to take and how much time he would spend in college to earn his degree in that specific career. Luckily for William, he is enrolled in mechatronics, which allows him to get a high paying job with only a two year degree. One of the benefits is that William can get a high paying job while in college and once he graduates the pay increases.
