Students learn English while Shopping

Joel Carrillo, an English Language Learner teacher for SCHS, runs a store for his students and named it “Hoy por ti tomorrow for me.” Carrillo says “it comes from the Spanish idiom that translates to the English one I Scratch Your Back You Scratch Mine but has more of the feeling of I do this in hopes that when I am in trouble someone will be there for me.” In English “hoy por ti” means today for you.

This store includes many different things from chairs to tables, candy, and many more. It is a helpful way for the students to gain confidence in speaking English. It is very important to learn how to speak and understand English because it will help the students be more successful in school and in future careers. Carrillo tries to motivate students to speak English when learning other subjects he teaches. “By this I mean speaking, writing, or listening and translating English properly,” Carrillo stated. Mr. Carrillo has been at Schuyler Central High School for three years. He first lived in Los Angeles, California then moved to Norfolk where he settled in Schuyler at the age of 2 or 3. His family has lived in Schuyler for 21 years now. Not only is he a teacher, but like his students he came to the United States and was also in a EL program in Schuyler. Mr. Carrillo graduated from SCHS in 2014. He went to the University of Nebraska Lincoln where he double majored in mathematics and education.

People typically donate to the store after I have bugged them about it. A better way might be through getting in contact with me through my email or phone number” Joel Carrillo explained. Many things can be donated to the store including; food, chairs, clothing, water, pans, and many other things. It is just like any other typical store where you have to have money, ask questions and buy your product. Students can earn fake money by finishing homework, helping someone else, showing up to school on time, and helping with cleaning up.

“The kids interact more with English when they know we are paying attention and there is an immediate reward for it. When learning something new and not feeling like doing it, it helps to know that we are watching them carefully and they get a treat.” Carrillo states.
