Striv new equipment gives Students an advantage
Schuyler Central High School has been having some new changes this year. SCHS has been streaming games in the new gym since last year. Recently SCHS received new cameras so the viewers from home can watch from different angles. The benefits of having this new equipment is it will be showing viewers different angles and there will be multiple cameras filming at once. The cameras will also be able to utilize instant replay. Schuyler Middle School Media Specialist and Broadcasting teacher, Shanda Hall said, “The new equipment will give our audience an expanded viewing experience compared to what we have done over the past few years. The audience will have more of a professional broadcast experience similar to college and professional productions.” There are three new cameras mounted on the gym walls each with 7 presets. There is also an instant replay module capable of creating playback right away and highlights for the ends of quarters, at halftime, and between games/matches. There are also cameras on the basketball backboards. Mrs. Hall also shared that “it is going to take us a little while to learn and master it all.”
The previous Striv equipment consisted of only having one camera on a tripod. Now there is access to 6 angles/cameras, instant replay, a new computer, tricasters, and three monitors to run it all. Mrs. Hall explained that, “a typical basketball game could be produced with 2 or 3 people before, whereas now, 7 or 8 students have the opportunity to produce a game! It will take some serious teamwork for the new STRIV experience.” Schuyler Central High School is the only high school in a 6 state region to have this equipment.
When the new gym was being built, they knew they had an opportunity to build the new installation in the gym for the future. Mrs. Hall and Dr. Hoesing, SCS Superintendant, just had to wait a bit to make it happen. Mrs. Hall explained “We worked with STRIV and Dr. Hoesing was able to secure funding for these upgrades. We now have some of the same equipment as Huskervision on the campus of UNL in Lincoln. The students of Schuyler Community Schools have a tremendous opportunity to be trained and work with top notch facilities and equipment.” The installations were planned in late 2020 and really moving this past Spring. Installation took place partially in the summer and finished up on August 31st. The equipment had to be timed so that classes/practices in the gym had minimal interruptions. According to, SCHS Broadcasting and Media Production teacher, Robbi McKenney, “the students who run the equipment will have an advantage over other students in this career area at college or also in the job market after high school.”
