On October 30, people from University of Nebraska in Lincoln, came to Schuyler Central High School to talk to students about Youth Participatory Action Research. Clarissa Eloge, an ESL, Reading and Social Studies teacher, is a cooperating teacher with Daisy Mejia, a Personal Finance teacher. They both work “to guide the group in the right direction and make sure progress is being made,” explained Ms. Eloge. “We are here for them to ask questions and to help them find materials or information if needed,” added Ms. Eloge.
This is the first year SCHS has participated in the YPAR project. YPAR is a project where students will be finding issues within the school or community that they would like to see change. Students were asked if they would be interested in participating in the YPAR project. These students are; Yaritza Mejia 9, Yuritza Mejia 9, Carly Lagunes 9, Sandra Ruiz De La Cruz 10, Bessy Garcia Escobar 10, Lydia “Bon” Mejia 11, Ashly Mosso Roque 11, Yanibeth Carias 12, Elizabeth Guit 12. These students get together once a month for now and once they start getting information they will probably start meeting more often. These projects will be presented at UNL in front of other schools doing the same project. This year two seniors that are interested in the Education field will be granted a full-ride scholarship to UNL to become teachers. Ms. Eloge shared that “it could definitely be a great experience for the students.”
