On October 30, County Government Day was held. County Government day is when the high schools across Colfax county give students the opportunity to participate in an eventful day visiting the Colfax County courthouse. Two weeks prior to October 30th, students signed up to attend, but could only go if they were in good standing with their grades. The week of October 23rd, students received permission slips for their parents to sign. Audrey Blaser, Schuyler Central High School’s American Government teacher, had a list of students to choose from. Only 16-18 students were allowed to participate. Mrs. Blaser shared that “More students wanted to participate this year so it was hard not to take everyone.”
Mrs. Blaser commented that the goal of County Government Day is “to teach students about their local government.” At the courthouse, the students took an oath then proceeded to play a scavenger hunt to learn about each role. Yamilet Ortiz, a junior at SCHS, shared that she found it interesting that lawyers needed more years in college than she thought, and “they still have the old record books from the 1800’s and 1900’s.” Each student was given a paper and pen and divided into three groups. The groups split up and learned the duties of each job and filled in blanks on their paper. After each group finished going around, the students were given the chance to earn candy by standing up and giving the right answer. Yamilet mentioned that her favorite part of County Government Day was getting to listen to the clerk. Yamilet explained that “he was fun and the person I understood the most.”
