On Tuesday, January 9th, 2024 a fire started on the Schuyler Elementary School. The fire was in the first grade section of the school. Bill Comley, the Schuyler Elementary Principal, shared that some of the damages, due to the fire, were due to “water is contained to the 1st and 3rd grade pods and smoke pretty much filled half the school.” Another example of the fire’s damage is that the fire created a hole on the roof in part of the first grade pod. Therefore, the first grade pod has been relocated to a different part of the school. Due to the damage from the fire, both the staff and students were not allowed to start the semester for 12 days.
As of January 19, the school had not made many repairs due to the weather. The repairs to the school were completed by a company called Bio Sweep. Bio Sweep removed the smoke and ash odor from the school building. On January 22, both the students and staff were able to go back to the Schuyler Elementary School building and resume school. “Once the weather is better they will be able to start on fixing the building,” Mr. Comley explained.
