Schuyler School’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapter, more commonly known as FCCLA, competed at State. State FCCLA was held on April 7-9 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. Daisy Meja, Personal Finance teacher and FCCLA Co-Advisor has been involved in FCCLA for two years. Ms. Meja did not have a FCCLA chapter during her high school years. Ms. Meja shared that one way she has helped her students become successful in their categories is by “being there to bounce ideas off and helping them organize their projects.” Cole Martinez, a Family Consumer Science teacher, was a co-advisor along with Mrs. Meja at State FCCLA.
There were a total of nine SCHS students who attended State FCCLA. Three out of those nine students competed. The students who competed were; Yanibeth Carias (12), Cristal Gurrola (12), and Allison Arriaga (10). Yanibeth and Cristal’s competition category was Interior Design Level 3, both received a Bronze medal. Allison’s competition category was Teach and Train Level 2. Allison received a Silver medal for her teaching and training demonstration. “It was their first time competing at State, but they did pretty well,” shared Ms. Meja.
This was Allison’s first time on a FCCLA team and first time competing at State. “I think I did pretty well for my first year FCCLA,” shared Allison. One thing Allison enjoyed about State was “the company of great friends and advisors.” One piece of advice Allison would give future members is to “do it, there’s something for you out there especially in FCCLA you’re never alone.”
