Managing school and work

Didier’s is one of the top youth employers in Schuyler.

Waking up early in the morning for school is not as easy as you think. Going to school and then afterwards going to work can be very tiring. Having to work almost everyday right after school, not having enough time to eat something, and changing into your work clothes is a struggle many students deal with. It’s sometimes a struggle to have a job, because you’re responsible for everything. For example, if you can’t make it to work, it’s your responsibility to find someone who can work your shift. It’s also a struggle when you have homework to do and won’t have enough time to do it at home. Although, I always try to get my homework done during class so I don’t have to worry about it after work.

I got a job, because I wasn’t doing anything after school, and I wanted to buy myself things and also want to save up some money. I work approximately 5 days a week, but lately I have been working almost every single day. I’m the person to cover other employees’ shifts and that is why I am always working at Didier’s. We use the GroupMe app for all the cashiers, that’s where we get our schedules and other important information from our managers. It helps to keep us informed and know our schedules to manage our time.

Having a job can get you away from things quite often. Sometimes you aren’t able to have time to do things you would like to do. During weekdays when I work, I don’t really have time to do anything at all. I always go straight to work right after school. The traffic there, right after school, sometimes slows me down. Although having a job isn’t quite so bad, you meet new people and become close friends with them and learn technical and customer service skills. When I first started working, I was nervous about how it was going to go. It went well and so far it’s been a great experience.
